Everything, Everything

I read this book in literally 3 hours flat. It’s another one from the Zoella book club after doing a book swap with my cousin (she’s now reading All The Bright Places), and what another fantastic choice. One of the most unusual books I’ve read, with a captivating story, complex characters and relationships, and based on love.

The story is written from the perspective of Maddy, a girl who is allergic to the world, and who lives fairly contently with her mum and nurse in her bubble of a house until, you guessed it, a bloody boy comes into the picture, turns her world upside down, and changes everything – typical! Although actually, Olly is one of my favourite characters out of the books I’ve read recently!

I imagine the book was written with teens and young adults (I’m a young adult at 22, right?!) in mind. And was totally different to anything I’ve ever read before, filled with odd pages of emails, illustrations, project notes and diary entries. Nicola Yoon has done a wonderful job at making the book creative and easy to read, focusing on only a few central characters meaning that you become invested in each.

The best part of the book, for me, was the completely unexpected twist. Usually I have at least an inkling when a game-changing event is about to occur, but no! I had no idea and was completely shocked, and with eyes wide open I continued reading at double the speed until I finished the whole book.

Reading a story from the perspective of somebody who couldn’t go outside, couldn’t go into the garden, a forest, the sea, who couldn’t go out and meet people, discover new places or see what the world has to offer, I found myself appreciating life and wanting to make the most of it. And for me, as well as having read a great book, that’s what I’ll take away from reading Everything, Everything.
