Harry Potter & The Cursed Child

*No spoilers*

I’VE SEEN MAGIC! I can’t even believe that I’m writing this post. Everyone that knows me knows that I am slightly (understatement) obsessed with all things Harry Potter. I really do think that JK Rowling is a genius – to create an entire wizarding world, the incredible stories and characters, and to translate it all into both books and films that completely captivate so many people, and that I’m pretty sure will love it for life.

And this weekend I got to go an experience the most amazing, magical, incredible (etc etc) thing… I went to see the new play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. And not only that, I got to sit on the front row! Even writing that now I can’t believe it actually happened, it still makes my stomach do somersaults of excitement! I could see everything up close and felt like I was the only person in the room, like the play was just for me.

However, I’ve been contemplating whether or not to write a blog about this. I’m obviously going to #keepthesecrets so I didn’t know what I would be able to write about without giving anything away. However, one of the reasons that I started writing this blog was to document everything I love and that makes me happy, and this was probably one of my favourite ever days.

So, after having a little think, I’ve decided to talk about a couple of aspects that I was curious/concerned about before the play, and that way I won’t give anything away. So…

Would it would capture the magic of the books and films? YES YES YES. It absolutely did. It was the most magical thing I’ve ever seen. The story was incredibly well written, and as some parts intertwined with aspects of the book, it required magic. Although it was obviously different to the films it was just as effective and just as breath-taking. Even sitting on the front row, there was magic that I couldn’t work out how it had been done, and still can’t.

How would it work without the cast from the films? This was probably my main concern. How could the play keep continuity with the films when the cast was different!? But it honestly just works. I absolutely love the film cast, some of my favourite actors and actresses are part of the films, and they’re the people I’ve grown up with in the Harry Potter world. But, the actors and actresses in the play are equally talented, and soon I was completely convinced that they were the characters – they did a phenomenal job. And let’s just address the controversy of Noma Dumezweni as Hermione – everyone, relax – she’s fantastic, and captures the essence of the character perfectly.

I now cannot wait for the play to come out in book form – I have mine pre-ordered, ready to collect as soon as it’s released! I’m sure everybody will find it just as wonderful. For those of you hoping to get tickets to the play, keep trying, I really hope you get to see it! And for anyone that has seen it, I’d love to discuss it (maybe direct message me on twitter? gemm_xox) but please don’t leave any spoilers in the comments! (#keepthesecrets)

  2. Ahhhhh I’m so jealous that you got to see it live! My greatest hope is that they film it later on so those of us who can’t get out there can still see it. And it’s great to know that it could still be magical even without movie CGI effects in place

  3. I love this post! I’ve always been curious about this play and how it would translate, but as you’ve mentioned, it’s just a pleasure to see anything when you have great characters that people identify with and love and great actors (even not the ‘originals’).

  16. I saw the play in August, and although I thought there were a few plot holes (and now have many questions) I absolutely loved both parts as well. It is one thing to see magic happen on screen with CGI special effects but they did a phenomenal job of creating the magic on stage! Literally no idea how they did some of it.
